Inky Mitch

In our February meeting, professional artist Ian Mitchell, otherwise known as Inky Mitch, entertained Kibworth Art Lovers and visitors with a presentation of his unique style of line and vibrant watercolour. Ian is known in the Knighton and Clarendon Park area of Leicester for his colourful ink drawings of local shops, streets and houses.
Of particular interest are his illustrated maps of the area. In which buildings and vegetation are simplified, sometimes using Google Earth to get accurate aerial views. However, his earlier career of 30 years as a commercial illustrator has taken him much further afield. Ian’s work is known internationally. His paintings are often recognisable by his own style of drawing people.
During the evening, Ian talked about the inspiration he found from other artists and illustrators such as John Piper, Rigby Graham and Quentin Blake. He demonstrated the use of various pens, sticks and bamboo cane for applying ink to make interesting marks. His relaxed, loose approach to using ink in this way aptly showed how he earned the name of ‘Inky Mitch’! We had a most enjoyable evening.
In our next meeting on Tuesday 31 March, we look forward to a demonstration in soft pastels by ‘Art by Andy’. On his website, the artist says “find a beautiful place to locate your studio. Be at peace with yourself. Help other people to achieve their goals. Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life.
Kibworth Art Lovers warmly welcome new members and visitors to our meetings.
Paintings by Helen Neave are on display at the Kibworth Branch of the MHBS throughout March, to be followed by those of Gussie Toft in April.
