Discourteous drivers in the village

Editorial

As a loyal subscriber to a national monthly magazine, I recently received an email asking me to fill out a questionnaire. One of the questions was about my thoughts on current car driver behaviour. It really stuck with me: did I think road users’ behaviour had become worse since Covid, stayed the same, or improved? I answered honestly, and I’m curious if many of you would agree that it’s definitely deteriorated. It seems drivers are becoming increasingly disrespectful and careless.

For example, I was walking down Fleckney Road the other day when I nearly got hit by a driver who parked their car across the dropped kerb at the corner of Buller Street. I pointed out how inconsiderate their actions were, but the driver just said, “Not my problem, it’s yours.” Thankfully, I wasn’t using a mobility scooter or pushing a pram and needed the dropped kerb to cross the road.

Another thing that bugs me is the regular parking of vehicles partly on pavements. It’s not really necessary, and I wonder why drivers do it. Is it because they want to protect themselves from the elements while other road users struggle to get around their SUVs on the narrow pavement?

Let’s all try to be more considerate and mindful of each other on the road and pavements. Kibworth, let’s show some sense and care for our fellow road and pavement users!
