Midland Main Line New
Energisation, (as it is called), between Kettering and South Wigston junction took place on Monday 28 July.
Electrification is nearing completion
Electrification was carried out by Network Rail and the contractor SPL Powerlines. We are now seeing the testing of the new bi-mode Class 810 Aurora trains passing through Kibworth using the newly installed overhead wires.
These trains are capable of travelling at 200kph (125mph). East Midlands Railway have a fleet of 33 five-carriage trains for their Intercity service.
The Government has suspended the electrification project beyond South Wigston junction, saying its focus is on other transport schemes.

The Class 810 Aurora trains
The Class 810 Aurora trains, manufactured by Hitachi Rail in Durham, are designed to operate on electric power when overhead wires are present and transition to diesel power in other sections of the route.
These five-coach trains were initially scheduled to commence service in 2022, but their operational commencement will now be delayed until 2026, pending the completion of testing. The 222 Meridian trains, which the new trains will replace, will be returned to the lease company.
