David Still
21 October 1935 – 30 June 2025

David became the Headmaster of Kibworth High School in January 1969. For the next twenty-five years he worked tirelessly in taking the school through a series of development changes. David was never happier than when he was out and about the school being with his teaching staff and his pupils. At the start, the school was on five sites within the village and very regular visits to all sites proved beneficial to all. Pupils would chat to him willingly and staff always found him to be approachable, encouraging and supportive. Educational changes kept David very busy: the school leaving age was raised to 16; the National Curriculum was introduced during his tenure; there was a steady increase in pupils attending the school; and he saw the phased movement to a single site school on Smeeton Road. All of these took place under his careful guidance and the establishing of a popular school, which parents wanted their children to attend, where their children were happy, and where all staff enjoyed their work and felt valued. He created the perfect learning environment for all pupils and the school’s staff. He really enjoyed being out with pupils during break times and at lunchtimes, wiping tables in the dining hall whilst chatting with them, helping staff on bus duty with his ‘bus board’ showing each bus’s arrival to take pupils home. He attended all school activities during the day, evenings and weekends, such as sports days at school and county level, concerts and social events. Total involvement in his school!
David lived in the catchment area in Foxton, a village he loved and an ideal home for his family. His children Matthew, Katharine and Alison worked hard at school and all achieved further education qualifications before moving away through work and marriage. The whole family had a very close and supportive relationship. David and wife Jenny took every opportunity to travel to many exotic places, but also always found great pleasure in short breaks to a special hotel in Norfolk! On retirement, David founded a Reading Group in Foxton, became a member of the Leicester City Singers and enjoyed various other local group activities. Jenny is a volunteer at Rutland Water Nature Reserve, which gives her great pleasure on a very regular basis.
The community’s thoughts are with Jenny and the family and there are lasting memories of the Kibworth that David led so enthusiastically.
