Kibworth On Call crew member: Andy Smith

Life as an On Call Firefighter
As part of our ongoing series introducing the dedicated team behind Kibworth’s On Call crew, we’re pleased to bring you another behind-the-scenes interview.
This time, we’re catching up with Crew Manager Andy Smith. We asked Andy about his experiences as an On Call Firefighter, what drives him, and what life is really like in the role.
We also want to take a moment to recognise Andy’s incredible dedication as he has proudly served as an On Call firefighter and Crew manager at Kibworth for over 40 years. His commitment, professionalism, and passion for the job continue to inspire the entire crew. Balancing both his Whole time and On Call roles is no small feat, and Andy’s longstanding service is a shining example of the dedication that underpins our team. So here goes.

Hi Andy, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Firstly, how long have you lived in Kibworth and what do you like most about the area?
I’ve lived here all my life, growing up surrounded by this wonderful landscape, stunning views, and unspoilt villages. The area is dotted with quaint public houses, many with relaxing gardens where you can unwind with a pint.
How long have you been part of the On Call Crew at Kibworth fire station?
I’ve been a firefighter here since 1983 and am currently in my 43rd year of active service.
What was your motivation for becoming an On Call Firefighter?
Funnily enough, it all started with a chimney fire at my parent’s house. Someone had put a piece of timber on the fire that was loaded with creosote and suddenly Whoosh, up it went! Not long after this, a gas fire was quickly installed. Off the back of that incident, my uncle, Dennis Swinn, encouraged me to visit the station and find out what the job was all about and the rest is history…
What do you enjoy most about the job?
I enjoy everything about my role within Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and have recently moved into a full-time position as a Crew Manager at Lutterworth Station. I love engaging with the community, meeting people from all walks of life, educating local Cubs, Beavers and Brownies on fire safety, and working closely with parish and district councillors to help keep our community safe.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in the role?
Balancing family life with serving the community is one incredible commitment. Somehow it’s worked all these years, but spending quality time with my family remains very important to me!
Do you have any advice to offer someone that is interested in becoming an On Call Firefighter?
Yes, it’s a great job and very rewarding. Like any role, it has its good parts, and some not so good, but I’ve always said, “I didn’t ask to be at this incident; I’m here to try and make a difference and help people!”
You learn so many different things as a firefighter. For example, first aid and basic life support, both of which are valuable, transferable skills that can be used outside of the fire service too.
Andy’s remarkable dedication to the fire service and the local community over the past four decades is truly inspiring. His passion, experience, and commitment embody the true spirit of service.
