Kibworth Art Lovers Update & Annual Exhibition

Chinese Brush Painting

Paul Maslowski knew that he had found what he was looking for when, in1996, he saw a Chinese artist demonstrating Chinese painting and Calligraphy at the Leicester Chinese Community Centre. Following this, he began to study Chinese Brush Painting under instruction from the very best of practitioners in Leicester. Paul was enthused further about Chinese poetry and traditional culture. After years of serious study in Taiwan and China, he continues to study Calligraphy and Painting with Taiwanese, Chinese and European artists. His work has won him national and international recognition.

There was no better person, therefore, to introduce the art of Chinese Brush Painting to the Kibworth Art Lovers during our April meeting. Paul’s great enthusiasm and expert presentation made for an inspiring evening. We learnt about the process of the painting from the grinding of the ink to the creation of meaningful characters and shapes on various kinds of paper. By the end of the evening, we knew how to recognize certain Chinese numbers and understood some of the illustrative qualities of the characters, the importance of ‘chi’ (life-force), how paintings are not finished until the artist’s seal has been stamped, and much more. There was a great deal to take in. Many of our members expressed a desire to ‘have a go’ at one of Paul’s workshops. You can see some of Paul’s artwork by clicking here.
