Exiting onto the A6 in Kibworth

Dear Editor

Exiting onto the A6 is a daily nightmare for many of us. A nightmare that is made considerably more dangerous because more than one vehicle in three is breaking the speed limit. Leicestershire County Council shows no interest in any fundamental solutions to the A6 problem but I suggest it should be pro-active in reducing speeding.

All junctions onto the A6 in Kibworth are problematic, particularly when turning right. But turning right from Church Road is especially dangerous for the following reasons:

a) there is limited visibility of traffic coming from the right

b) when a larger vehicle pulls up on the left- hand lane it is impossible to see traffic travelling from the left on the A6.

c) the 30mph speed limit sign coming in from Harborough is very close to the Church Road junction therefore not allowing adequate slowing distance especially for HGVs

The solution?

With the opportunity for a bypass long gone we have to deal with what we have. We need a serious blitz on speeding. I suggest the following strategies:

a) Move the 30mph sign further south of the New Road exit to give HGVs adequate time to slow down and traffic from New Road to emerge more safely

b) Install flashing Speed Indicator Displays (SIDs) at various points along the residential parts of the A6. These provide real-time speed feed-back and alert drivers when they are speeding. These signs are inexpensive and easy to install. So why are they not used in Kibworth?

c) Install traffic lights at peak periods. Lights are sometimes in operation when there are road works. This enables traffic from Church Road and Marsh Avenue to exit smoothly.

How can we get Leicestershire county Council to pull its finger out and make life safer for Kibworth residents? Any ideas?
