Gems Charity – What An Amazing Community You Are!

We reported in the March edition of the Chronicle that we had reached our current target to extend and refurbish the chemotherapy unit at the LRI, thanks to all the support we have locally, and that our fundraising to make the patients more comfortable during their cancer treatment would continue.

Well, the people and businesses of Kibworth and surrounding areas just keep making our aim possible. Since March we have received some amazing donations…

Edd and Andy took over The Kings Head, Smeeton in March 2023. During their first year they have been continuing the great support for GEMS and donated a fabulous £3,549.68 through various innovative ways, such as a mince pie competition at Christmas, plant sales, music evenings and regular quizzes to name but a few. The next quiz will be on Saturday 1 June 2024. Please make sure you book your team in with Edd and Andy, as it fills up very quickly.

The Golf Club Captains Charity for 2023 came to an end in March. Jenny and Mike kindly chose GEMS as their charity for the year and handed over a cheque totalling a whopping £6,870.01. They worked so hard fundraising over the year, along with organising the golfing events involved in being captains.

The Cricket Club have been hosting a regular quiz night for over a year, with the very talented quiz master Jim. Enthusiastic quizzers pay just £1 to enter, which is donated to charity. Jim contacted us to ask if we were free one Monday evening to go up and collect the donation and have some pictures with the quizzers. We of course said, “yes please, we would love to.” We entered the quiz, had a great time, unsurprisingly we didn’t win the quiz but were big winners as we came away with their very kind and wonderful donation of £500.

The NFU Market Harborough phoned us to check our bank details as they had a donation for us. Again they are great supporters of GEMS, but they didn’t mention the amount on the phone, so you can imagine our delight when an amazing £3,254.50 was transferred to us.

The Railway Arms has been one of the constant supporters of GEMS and are yet again supported us by hosting the Clutter Sale between 16 – 18 May. Another brilliant day with lots of money raised.

Note to all gardeners out there: we will NOT be running the Smeeton Westerby Open Garden event this year, but we WILL next year; however, if you have any spare plants or cuttings The Kings Head will be selling plants in aid of GEMS, so please drop them off to Edd and Andy. We have some wonderful plants donated already, which will be down there for sale very soon.

All of this is just wonderful. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the fundraising, donating time and supporting GEMS Charity.
