Kibworth Community Library

“Moving is a test of your relationship. If you can survive assembling IKEA furniture, you can conquer anything” ~ Effly

By the time this Chronicle has been delivered to your door, the library in Paget St will have been closed for a week. We will, hopefully, be well on our way to re-opening in the Kibworth Community Hub at the Old Grammar School.

There have been a few items of furniture to assemble, thankfully quite straightforward, and there have been no fallings out! Although, you certainly feel your age when you’re crawling around on the floor looking for that final screw to complete the build.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you into our new library on Monday 27 October. We open at 10am. We’ll be offering everybody who comes to see us on our first day tea / coffee and biscuits. Plus, the first few lucky visitors will get a free book. Our groups restart on the opening day as well. So we have Family History at 2pm, and Children’s Story and Rhyme Time resumes on Tuesday 28 October at 10.15am.

Our First Event

Do you know your cope from your chasuble, your filé from your floss? Whether you are a history buff or an embroidery enthusiast, we are very excited about our first event in the new library. It is ‘The Circle of Life – an Opus Anglicanum Project’.

Opus Anglicanum, meaning ‘English work,’ refers to the luxurious and intricate religious embroideries created in Medieval England from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It is known for its use of fine gold and silver thread to create detailed, opulent designs on textiles.

The ‘Circle of Life – Opus Anglicanum’ is a historically significant, modern embroidery project that is reviving the ancient medieval art using gold and silver thread to create a circular artwork and a funeral pall for the Worshipful Company of Upholders’ 400th anniversary.

Designed by Aidan Hart and created by cathedral and prison teams, it will feature 12 panels depicting the Upholders’ history, which can be detached and attached to the pall, symbolising the cycle of life and death.

We are delighted to have Alison Andrews from the Derby Cathedral Embroidery Workshop come to talk to us about this fascinating project. Please join us on Wednesday 26 November. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets will be on sale in the new library from the day we re-open! They will be £6 and include a complimentary glass of wine/soft drink.
